On Dec 12, 2015 the Paris climate summit concluded with delegates from 195 nations adopting the Paris Agreement, the first-ever agreement to commit almost every country to fight climate change. This year participating countries will begin efforts to achieve 17 Sustainable Development Goals over the next 15 years. http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/ The Harrington Park Environmental Commission and Green Team members want to make the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development accessible to our local community and plan to post information on the 17 goals over the next months.
We invite you to join with us and act locally.
The Harrington Park Green Team was formed in October 2009 as an advisory body to the Environmental Commission. The Green Team is composed of borough officials and residents and meets monthly to focus on mandatory and elective actions toward Sustainable Jersey certification and re-certification. http://www.sustainablejersey.com/
“Sustainable Jersey is a nonprofit organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue sustainability programs. By supporting community efforts to reduce waste, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and improve environmental equity, Sustainable Jersey is empowering communities to build a better world for future generations.”
After 3 years of work involving ongoing cleanup, education, research and documentation, outreach activities, and more...Harrington Park celebrated successful Bronze level Sustainable Jersey certification in 2012. We had completed 170 points in mandatory and elective actions and our town was awarded the Innovation and Creativity Award that year! Even though certification lasts for three program years, the Harrington Park EC and Green Team has chosen to recertify each year, with the goal to continue the positive changes in culture, appearance and practices related to sustainability in our community.
In 2013 Harrington Park was recertified with 180 points, in 2014 we completed 210 points and did so again the 2015. In 2015 Harrington Park was also awarded the 2015 Sustainability Champion Award – for having the largest number of points (210) for this certification cycle for a population under 5,000.
The Green Team (Mission Statement) is committed to developing strategies that will reduce our impact on the environment both collectively and individually, so that we might preserve our town’s natural resources for the citizens of Harrington Park now and in the future.
We enjoy what we do, know we are making an impact and invite you to join us in making a difference in our town and in the world! Please look at the second page for contact information and information about our next meeting (the first Wed of each month at 7:30 at Borough Hall)
