The giants are the work of Brian Oakes, a resident of HP and a student at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Each newspaper giant represents an artist giant to Brian. They are Egon Schiele, Alexander Calder, Frank Auerbach, Lucien Freud and Jean-Michel Basquiat; all twentieth century impressionists and/or modernists. The newspaper men were accompanied by a sign that read “Soon the Giant”.
This is Brian’s signature in hopes of one day being a giant in the art world. They were only in place for one day as they are made mainly of paper and are subject to the elements. In a way they are as fleeting as Brian’s childhood here in Harrington Park. Hopefully they will appear again soon, maybe at the library or Borough Hall??
