“Soon the Giant”

Giants2Maybe you were one of the lucky ones to spot a giant newspaper man in Harrington Park on Monday.  There were five of them just hanging out at the artist’s favorite spots around town.  Giants1

The giants are the work of Brian Oakes, a resident of HP and a student at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Giants2Each newspaper giant represents an artist giant to Brian.  They are Egon Schiele, Alexander Calder, Frank Auerbach, Lucien Freud and Jean-Michel Basquiat;  all twentieth century impressionists and/or modernists.   The newspaper men were accompanied by a sign that read “Soon the Giant”.  Giants8

This is Brian’s signature in hopes of one day being a giant in the art world.  They were only in place for one day as they are made mainly of paper and are subject to the elements.  In a way they are as fleeting as Brian’s childhood here in Harrington Park.   Hopefully they will appear again soon, maybe at the library or Borough Hall??
