After school some students, teachers, and administration staff joined Mayor Hoelscher and members of the Harrington Park Environmental Commission, Green Team, and Council to celebrate the life of environmentalist Mark Becker at Don Horsey Park. A lovely ceremony was held with a tree planting and the dedication of a dogwood to Mark, a co-founder of Bergen SWAN. From its beginnings in 1988, Bergen SWAN has been aggressively pursuing the preservation of the watershed buffer forests around our drinking water reservoirs. To date, they have helped protect from development over 3,300 acres of woods and wetlands, and over 300 acres of golf courses. HP students read nature poems by American poets Emily Dickenson, Robert Frost, Joyce Kilmer, Jane Yolen, and Roy Scheele. It was a wonderful and profound way to celebrate Earth Day and to honor a man who contributed so significantly to the world around us. Thank you Lori Charkey for sharing your memories of your partner Mark with us! His legacy will benefit all of us for generations to come.
