A huge thank you to the 29 enthusiastic volunteers who came to the spring Harrington Park open space cleanup last Saturday. There were only ~2 hours of cool cloudy weather before the rain really started falling, but in that time the 13 children & 16 adults had finished most of the cleanup of the swampy wooded land at the south end of Brook Street. The cleanup was sponsored by the Harrington Park Environmental Commission, Green Team & Beautification Committee in conjunction with United Water & the Bergen County Clean Communities Program.Councilwoman Michelle Ryan coordinated this clean up- thank you Michelle! The volunteers collected- and sorted for proper disposal- 2 tires, a large metal pole, an inner tube, the usual beer and soda cans- including plenty with “pop- tops” (there since the 80’s), a plastic sled (taken home by a volunteer- so “reused!”), many plastic bags, and much more…SIX large barrels were filled with recyclables and TEN bags were filled with trash…The Green Team plans to hold a fall cleanup later this year 2014. Stop by the south end of Brook Street and you will notice a huge difference- before and after! The massive snow pile is almost gone, the swamp cabbage is showing green leaves now, and the muddy areas are CLEAN!
