It is amazing how much stuff can accumulate over the year(s). With longer days and warmer temperatures, people are motivated to declutter and spruce up their homes and yards.
Starting April 1st, trash pickup will be twice a week (Wed and Sat) until October 31st. Please think before you throw something out. Anything picked up at the curb as waste costs money to dispose of (and the items fill up landfills). Can it be recycled? (it pays to recycle!) Is your junk someone else’s treasure?
The HP recycling center is open 6 days a week > 5pm Saturdays. It accepts mixed paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminum cans and foil, glass (brown, green and clear) and newspapers- as well as used motor oil.
Large metal items will be picked up by the DPW—call 201-768-0944
Vegetative Waste: Garden refuse is collected curbside by the HP DPW on Mondays- from April 1st – Oct 31st. Please place leaves, dead plants, small twigs & branches in barrels by the curb to be picked up and composted. The first collection for 2012 will be on Monday April 2, 2012.
The Bergen County Utilities Authority collects many items for recycling or disposal, free for Bergen County residents. Please look at previous postings or for further information call the BCUA Environmental Programs Hotline at 201-807-5825 or go to the BCUA Web site at: www.bcua.org.
Electronics: Since January 1st, 2011 it is illegal to discard computers, monitors, televisions and laptops in the general trash in New Jersey.
>>>>>The next collection for these items will be at Bergen County Community Services Bldg, 327 East Ridgewood Ave., Paramus, NJ on Sunday, April 29, 2012
Paper Shredding- in HP: A mobile truck will be at the HP Town Day event on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Boro Hall > bring papers to be shredded (and visit the various displays)!
Household Hazardous Wastes: These include: paints, automotive products, pesticides, aerosols, flammable materials. The next collection will be at Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Rd., Paramus on Sunday, April 15, 2012.
Old and worn clothes; toys, small household goods, shoes– there are collection bins for the Salvation Army and DARE by the Recycling Center on Penn Street.
Rummage sale: The HP Library will host it’s annual rummage sale on Saturday June 2nd from 8am-2pm. $15 will buy you a spot and a chance to sell your unwanted possessions. Your trash may well be someone else’s treasure!
Or… host a garage sale (with your neighbors)?
Bergen County Freecycle(TM) is a yahoo group open to all who want to see their beloved and formerly useful possessions in a good home.
