A great way to reduce your family’s solid waste output is to compost. This is not hard to do and there is a lot of information out there on the subject. This is not hard to do and there is a lot of information out there on the subject. www.howtocompost.org is a comprehensive site to look at. The BCUA sells a compost bin, the Earth Machine™ homecomposting bin at a discount for Bergen County residents. An example of this has been displayed at town day and during the April Mulch sale at Boro Hall, one is used at HP school by the Garden Club, and several HP residents use this bin.
From the BCUA- The Earth Machine™ can be used to compost fruit and vegetable scraps, crushed eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters in to mulch for your lawn and garden. Compost creates a rich, all natural soil nutrient for landscapes, gardens, and houseplants. Compost also enhances soil’s ability to retain moisture and can reduce your reliance on chemical fertilizers.
Compost bins cost $52 (regular retail price is $100) and are available Mon-Fri at the BCUA by appointment only. Contact the BCUA Environmental Programs Hotline at (201) 807-5825 to schedule an appointment or for more information.
